Is it really the HDMI port? A five-minute check before you drive over
A dead picture doesn’t always mean a dead port, and we’d rather you find that out at home than after a trip to Manor. Work through these in order — if the picture comes back at any point, you’ve saved yourself a repair.
Rule out the easy stuff first
| 1. Swap the HDMI cable. Use one you know works from another device. Cheap cables fail far more often than ports do. |
| 2. Try a different input, then a different TV. A blown HDMI input on the TV looks exactly like a blown port on the console. |
| 3. Confirm the console is actually running. Power light on, fan audible, disc drive responding? Then the PS5 itself is alive and the problem sits somewhere in the video path. |
| 4. Boot into Safe Mode. Hold the power button and release after the second beep, then choose Change Video Output → Change Resolution. That forces 720p, which occasionally gets a picture back when a handshake is failing. |
| 5. Look inside the port with a flashlight. Bent, flattened or missing pins — or a port that wiggles when you touch it — means hardware. |
If you get a picture only when you hold the cable at a certain angle, stop testing and unplug it. That is a cracked solder joint, and every extra wiggle risks tearing a pad off the board and turning a straightforward repair into a much harder one.
What actually breaks a PS5 HDMI port
The HDMI port on a PS5 is soldered directly to the mainboard. There is no plug-in module to swap out, which is why a big-box store will tell you the console is a write-off, and why this is board-level work rather than a parts change.
Nearly every failure we see is mechanical. Someone trips over the cable. The console gets knocked off a shelf while it is still plugged in. It gets carried to a friend’s house with the cable dangling. A younger sibling pulls it out sideways. All of that puts leverage on a connector that was never designed to take it, and the tiny solder joints underneath crack, or the pins bend far enough to short against each other.
Less often the port survives but the chip driving it does not, usually after a surge that came in through the TV rather than the wall. That is exactly why the diagnostic is free and comes first: fitting a new port to a console with a damaged encoder would not fix anything, and we would rather find that out before you pay for a repair.
